Cinder Block Calculator – Estimate Blocks, Mortar & Fill

Calculate how many cinder blocks you need for your wall. Estimates blocks, mortar bags, and fill volume. Supports 8×8×16, 6×8×16, and 12×8×16 blocks.

Cinder Block Calculator Formula

Blocks = ⌈Wall Area / Block Face Area⌉; Mortar Bags = ⌈(Blocks × 0.03 × 1.1) / 0.7⌉

How to Calculate Cinder Block

  1. 1. Calculate wall area: Area = Wall Length × Wall Height (sq ft)
  2. 2. Determine block face area: Standard 8×8×16 = 0.89 sq ft per block
  3. 3. Calculate blocks needed: Blocks = ⌈Wall Area / Block Face Area⌉
  4. 4. Calculate mortar: Each block uses ~0.03 cu ft of mortar, add 10% for waste
  5. 5. Mortar bags: Total mortar cu ft ÷ 0.7 (one 80lb bag ≈ 0.7 cu ft)
  6. 6. Calculate fill volume for block cores if needed

Example Calculation

Let's say you're building a 50ft × 8ft wall with standard 8×8×16 cinder blocks.

  • wallLength: 50
  • wallHeight: 8
  • blockSize: 8x8x16

You need 450 blocks, 22 bags of mortar (80lb), and approximately 7.99 cubic yards of fill material

Tips

  • A standard 8×8×16 cinder block covers 0.89 sq ft of wall area (including mortar joint)
  • One 80lb bag of mortar mix yields about 0.7 cubic feet — enough for roughly 23 blocks
  • Always order 5–10% extra blocks to account for breakage and cuts
  • For load-bearing walls, fill block cores with concrete and add rebar per local building codes

Frequently Asked Questions

How many cinder blocks do I need for a wall?
For a standard 8×8×16 block covering 0.89 sq ft, divide your wall area (length × height) by 0.89. For example, a 50ft × 8ft wall (400 sq ft) needs about 450 blocks. Always add 5–10% extra.
How many bags of mortar do I need for 100 blocks?
For 100 standard cinder blocks, you need approximately 5 bags of 80lb mortar mix. Each bag covers about 23 blocks when applied at standard joint thickness (3/8 inch).
What size cinder block should I use?
The standard 8×8×16 inch block is the most common for residential walls. Use 12-inch blocks for retaining walls or load-bearing applications. 6-inch blocks are used for non-load-bearing interior walls.
