Gutter Calculator – Size, Downspouts & Drainage Capacity

Calculate the right gutter size and number of downspouts for your roof. Based on IPC standards. Supports 5-inch and 6-inch K-style gutters.

Gutter Calculator Formula

Gutter Size = f(Effective Drainage Area); Downspouts = ⌈Effective Area / (340 × Rainfall)⌉

How to Calculate Gutter

  1. 1. Calculate effective drainage area: Effective Area = Roof Area × Rainfall Intensity × Pitch Factor
  2. 2. Pitch Factor = √(1 + (pitch/12)²) — if pitch provided
  3. 3. If effective area ≤ 5,520 sq ft: use 5-inch K-style gutters
  4. 4. If effective area > 5,520 sq ft: use 6-inch K-style gutters
  5. 5. Downspouts = ⌈Effective Area / (340 × Rainfall Intensity)⌉ (minimum 1)

Example Calculation

Let's say you're sizing gutters for a 2,000 sq ft roof with 1 in/hr rainfall and 6/12 pitch.

  • roofArea: 2000
  • rainfallIntensity: 1
  • roofPitch: 6

Recommended: 5-inch K-style gutters with 5 downspouts, drainage capacity covers 107% of effective area

Tips

  • A 5-inch K-style gutter can handle up to 5,520 sq ft of drainage area at 1 inch/hour rainfall
  • A 6-inch K-style gutter handles up to 7,960 sq ft — use for larger roofs or heavy rainfall areas
  • Standard 2×3 inch downspouts handle about 340 sq ft of roof area per downspout at 1 in/hr
  • Check your local rainfall intensity data — some areas experience 3+ inches per hour during storms

Frequently Asked Questions

What size gutters do I need for a 2,000 sq ft roof?
For most homes with a 2,000 sq ft roof and moderate rainfall (1 in/hr), 5-inch K-style gutters are sufficient. If you have steep roof pitch or heavy local rainfall, consider 6-inch gutters. You'll typically need 3–5 downspouts.
How many downspouts do I need?
A general rule is one downspout for every 30–40 feet of gutter run. For a 2,000 sq ft roof with 1 in/hr rainfall, you need approximately 5 downspouts. More downspouts are needed in areas with heavy rainfall.
How do I calculate gutter size?
Multiply your roof area by the local rainfall intensity (in/hr) and a pitch adjustment factor. If the result is under 5,520 sq ft, 5-inch gutters work. Over that, use 6-inch gutters. The pitch factor for a 6/12 pitch roof is about 1.12.
